Shelter Dog Has Been ‘Overlooked’ Again & Again, Still Hasn’t Lost Hope

Six hundred and fifty-one days is a long time to spend in one place. Especially when that place is a shelter kennel. Rex, though, has been there through as many mornings and nights as there have been. And a video shared by @rescue.adopt.foster.tohas shows just how quiet that wait has become for him. The 3-year-old Terrier mix sits in his kennel while neighboring dogs bark, but Rex barely reacts. He does not rush toward the camera or try to grab anyone’s attention. The shelter dog simply looks away, then back again, as the question appears on screen: “How many times can a dog be overlooked?”

Rex sits almost completely still as the video continues, and the next message asks, “Before someone finally sees him?” Dogs in the nearby kennels keep barking, yet Rex remains quiet. He looks down as another message asks viewers to share him so more people might notice.

There is a softer side of Rex, though, and his shelter profile gives a much fuller picture. He is playful, loves ropes and balls, and is very motivated by treats. He already knows sit, down, paw, stay, and come, so there is plenty of personality waiting once he feels comfortable with someone.

Rex can be shy around new people at first, but the people who know him say he becomes sweet, affectionate, and deeply attached once he trusts them. Because he plays with plenty of energy, his ideal home would have teens or older children. He also needs to be the only pet in the house.

One earlier still photo shows him outside the kennel, sitting on a wooden bench and looking a little more relaxed. The video has received more than 3,300 likes, with viewers asking others to keep sharing his story. One person wrote, “I hate that we are still counting,” while another called Rex a scared boy who would likely be much happier and more playful outside the shelter. Hopefully, someone will come soon for this overlooked shelter dog and give him all the love in the world.
