Human Takes Longest Resident Shelter Dog To Watch Her First Sunset & Show Life Beyond Kennel Walls

Ginger Spice, a rescue dog at Southampton Animal Shelter, was taken to the beach after waiting 1,010 days for a family. In the video shared by @southamptonanimalshelteradopt, a human named Jess helped her into the car, dressed her in blue pajamas, and let her see the sunset. The shelter said Ginger needed a reminder that life exists beyond kennel walls.

The video began with Jess taking Ginger out after the shelter’s longest resident had spent 1,010 days there. On-screen text said, “Our longest resident just hit 1010 days. Let’s take her to see her first sunset.” Ginger sat in the car, looking curious, while the caption imagined her asking, “Jess, where are you taking me?”

The outing soon turned into a quiet beach moment. Ginger walked on the sand, looking toward the waves, and sat beside Jess. The on-screen words imagined her thinking, “Is this really the world outside my kennel?” Another line read, “After all these years, I hope I get to see this again with someone I call mine.”

The shelter wrote that Ginger Spice waited 1,010 days for someone to rescue her. Before arriving at SASF, she was also at Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, so her wait began even earlier.

Ginger is 7 years old, weighs 51 pounds, and is great with select dogs. She does best with a male dog companion and needs a cat-free home. Ginger requires a caring and patient parent.

The shelter later added that the dog had received only two applications since her story was shared. One application came from out of state. They explained that Ginger may need multiple visits before she feels safe enough to open up.
