Many shelter dogs need more than food and a place to sleep when they first arrive. They also need time to adjust, learn that they are safe, and begin trusting the people around them. The process can be challenging, particularly for dogs that are frightened or withdrawn. One volunteer recently documented that transformation in a video of a pup named Sheri, whose confidence has grown dramatically in just a few weeks.

Rachel, an Instagram user @rachelishsaa, explained in her video that she first met Sheri about two weeks earlier while volunteering at the shelter. At the time, the dog was extremely fearful and struggled to leave her kennel. According to Rachel, getting Sheri to move was a challenge, as the frightened pup would lie on her back and remain completely still.
Footage from those early encounters shows her attempting to encourage Sheri with treats. Despite the effort, the dog remained hesitant and appeared unsure about stepping out of the kennel. Her body language reflected the stress and uncertainty that many shelter dogs experience when adjusting to a new environment.
When Rachel returned to visit Sheri again a week later, however, she noticed a significant difference. Rather than shaking or hiding away, the dog was sitting on her bed, wagging her tail excitedly. The pooch’s reaction suggested she recognized Rachel and felt more comfortable in her presence.
The video then follows the pair outside the kennel, where Sheri appears to enjoy a completely different experience from the one Rachel first witnessed. As she explores the outdoors, the dog takes in the sights and sounds around her while staying close to the volunteer. Throughout the outing, Sheri frequently leans into the latter and snuggles beside her, seemingly finding reassurance in her company.
Rachel reflected on the dog’s progress in the caption, writing, “Two weeks ago this shelter dog wouldn’t stop shaking in her kennel, this is how she is today.” She also identified Sheri as her “dog of the day” and noted that the rescue-only pup is located at ACCT Philly.
