Losing a home can be especially confusing for dogs who have spent years surrounded by the same people and familiar routines. What may be a practical decision for a family can leave a pet facing an entirely different life, with no understanding of why everything around them has suddenly changed. That was the situation for one Saint Bernard named Saint, whose shelter stay unexpectedly turned into a much happier new beginning.
Giant dog never thought he’d lose his family, only to end up in a kennel, but gets adopted
Saint had spent his life as part of a family, so ending up behind kennel doors was likely far from anything he expected. A video shared by @southamptonanimalshelteradopt on Instagram shows the four-year-old Saint Bernard sitting inside the shelter. He appears subdued and confused as he adjusts to being away from the people he knew.
According to the shelter, Saint was surrendered for a reason that had nothing to do with his behavior. His family was relocating and could not take him along, leaving the gentle giant to start over. While the circumstances were beyond his control, Saint was suddenly left waiting for someone else to give him a home.
Shelter staff worked to help him settle in while they began looking for his next home. They soon found that there was plenty to love about the large dog. Saint was described as having an affectionate and gentle personality. He is also said to be the kind of dog who enjoys simply being around people.
Saint had previously lived with young children, and the shelter said he adores every person he meets. His calm and easygoing temperament was another reason staff believed he could make an excellent family companion.
Of course, a dog of Saint’s size comes with some expected quirks. As a Saint Bernard, he is prone to plenty of drooling. Still, the shelter suggested that his loving personality “more than makes up for it.” More than anything, Saint seemed ready to leave his kennel and return to being someone’s beloved companion.
The shelter’s wish eventually came true. In a follow-up update, staff announced that Saint had been adopted and thanked everyone who applied and supported his search. After losing his family through circumstances he could not control, Saint finally found another home and the chance to be a family dog once again.
