A missing service dog and her dad have been reunited after a search effort that captured the attention of an entire community. The search ultimately ended with an emotional reunion that left Navy veteran Scott Baker in tears as he finally found his beloved pup, Mal’i.

For several days, Scott Baker refused to leave Jacksonville, Florida, without his service dog, Mal’i. The Navy veteran from Iowa had been searching for the dog ever since she ran off following a hit-and-run incident. With no way of knowing where she had gone or what condition she might be in, Baker immediately began searching for the dog he depends on every day.

As news of the missing service dog spread, members of the Jacksonville community stepped up to help. Residents shared flyers, monitored neighborhoods, reported possible sightings, and passed along tips in the hope of bringing Mal’i home. What started as one owner’s desperate search soon became a community effort involving people Baker had never met. Throughout the ordeal, Baker remained determined to continue looking.

The breakthrough came just after midnight on Thursday when he received a text message from an anonymous tipster (via 10News). The message included a photograph and directions pointing him toward a wooded area. It was located a little more than a mile from where Mal’i had last been seen.

With renewed hope, Baker headed to the area carrying a remote connected to Mal’i’s collar. The device allowed him to activate a beeping signal that could help locate her in the dark. As he searched through the area, he suddenly heard the sound. “I could hear it, and that just gave me so much joy that she’s here, she’s somewhere around here,” Baker said.

Moments later, he spotted a pair of eyes reflecting in the darkness. “I shined the light and I saw her eyes, and that moment I said, ‘There she is,’” Baker recalled. “She stood up and put her nose through the fence, she knew it was me.”

After being taken for a full veterinary examination, Mal’i received encouraging news. Baker said the dog had no broken bones despite the accident. Aside from a few cuts and minor lacerations, she was found to be in good condition and expected to recover.
