The howling coming from Gunner’s kennel was impossible for a shelter volunteer to ignore, so she decided to film it. The 8-year-old had spent his whole life with one family, only to be left at the shelter when they moved to another state without him. In the video shared by @sharing.lov, the shelter dog is still crying when the volunteer arrives with an “adopted” sticker he has no idea is meant for him.
A few moments later, Gunner is meeting the family who came to take him home. The video captures the change on his face almost immediately.
Abandoned shelter dog becomes his ‘happiest’ when a new family adopts him
The video begins with the volunteer finding Gunner sitting in his kennel with a sad, searching expression, and learns that he had recently been surrendered after eight years with the same family. A walk did little to cheer him up. Gunner kept howling and looking around, as though he was still trying to understand where his people had gone.
Then his story reached the right person. His new mom saw the video of him crying and felt she had to meet him. The very next day, her husband drove to the shelter. The reunion is the sweetest part.
When the volunteer opens Gunner’s kennel, she holds up the “adopted” sticker. He has no idea what is about to happen to him. Then his new dad appears, and Gunner lights up instinctively. His tail starts wagging, his paws tap, and his face looks completely different.
Soon, his new dad is walking him out of the shelter on a leash. Gunner heads toward the car. Once inside, his dad even puts a new toy in with him. The volunteer says she cried as she watched him leave, knowing his “best chapter yet is just beginning.”
A later update showed Gunner settling into his new home, keeping watch from the window, and playing with his furry siblings. His family says he follows his mom everywhere and loves lying beside her.
The shelter dog’s video has picked up 8,000 likes, with viewers celebrating the second chance. One commenter wrote, “I’m not crying at all!” Another joked that the neighborhood is now in very good hands. After losing the only home he had known, this shelter dog finally got a new one.
