A Florida resident is back in the doghouse with an increasing number of animal cruelty charges, according to Local 10 News in Dania Beach. A domestic violence report brought police to Raymond Christian Ledbetter’s home. What they weren’t expecting to find? Over 60 dogs, most in poor condition. One unlucky dog was deceased when officers arrived. After more dogs were seized, some had to be euthanized due to extremely poor health. Now, after further investigation, Ledbetter is facing 125 charges involving the case.
Dog Owner Faces Serious Animal Cruelty Charges
Broward Animal Care officers who responded to the scene reported that it took days to capture all of Ledbetter’s dogs. Many of the dogs present had not been socialized. Many of the 60-plus dogs were terrified of new people. Some had chewed through the home’s walls. On the bright side, animal control officers believe that most of these dogs can be rehabilitated with love and patience.
“I think you work with the pets,” Cherie Wachter, Broward Humane Society’s vice president of marketing told Local 10 News. “You’re gonna have a wonderful family member and everything right now is a little scary for them.”
The dogs have been placed for adoption at the Broward County Animal Care and Adoption Center on Southwest 42nd Street.
Caring for Abused Pets
It’s admirable to take on a pet who has faced lots of previous hardships. If you want to adopt an animal who was rescued from a hoarding situation, be prepared. Your new dog may not have experienced many normal things, like walks, toys, or even frequent affection. Be patient, and consider help from a professional trainer to get your dog acclimated to the real world.
If you’re not in a place to adopt, consider volunteering with rescued pets. Your efforts to socialize abused pets can make all the difference in finding them a forever home.
