Splashing around in a backyard pool is usually the highlight of any energetic pup’s summer day. A bittersweet Instagram video posted by @the.invisible.8 shows a beautiful shelter dog named Dino doing exactly that, but there’s a sad backstory. This five-year-old boy originally arrived at a New York rescue as a frightened stray on a cold January evening.
Dino initially spent his days curled up under a blanket to hide from the loud, unfamiliar environment. Now, Dino has officially logged an incredible 1,253 days waiting for someone to finally take him home.
Shelter dog has waited for a long time to be adopted by a loving home
The video opens with Dino happily splashing around a large blue tub full of water. Then he jumps out and launches into a fast lap of backyard zoomies. On-screen text reveals that this playful footage is now two years old. Despite his great energy and happy smile, Dino still sits in that exact same facility today. He even had a wonderful meet-and-greet with a potential family who ultimately didn’t return to finalize the paperwork.
Dino looks incredibly athletic as he shakes his wet fur in the video as we continue to learn about him. He currently weighs around 44 pounds and has blossomed immensely thanks to dedicated rescue volunteers.
This mixed-breed shelter dog has a very sensitive nature, so trust does not always come easily to him. He can be cautious around new people and sometimes guards his food bowl out of old habits. Because of these traits, he needs a calm, adult-only home where he can be the only pet. A patient owner working alongside a trainer can easily help this smart boy maintain his growing confidence.
The emotional video of the shelter dog gained nearly a thousand likes within 24 hours of being posted. The Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter team is determined to share his face until the right match walks through the door. The clip wraps up with a handsome portrait of Dino and a direct appeal to help save him.
