Specialist Andrew Brown and his military dog, Rocky, were serving in Afghanistan several months ago when they were injured by shrapnel in the blast from an IED as they were searching a compound. Brown and Rocky were awarded Purple Hearts for their service after being flown to Kandahar for treatment. That's where the two were separated as Brown was flown to the U.S. for treatment while Rocky stayed in Europe to recover.

Several months later, they were finally reunited in Maryland. It was the longest that the two had ever been apart, and they were very excited to be together again. Rocky is considered a full soldier in the military, and his rank is actually one above Brown's, as dogs are ranked higher than their handlers. Both soldiers are currently recovering and may return to active service, depending on how things go.

Rocky suffered a broken femur and tail injuries, and he may be medically retired if it turns out that his injuries don't allow him to return to duty. Brown believes Rocky has the drive to get back to work, but he has made it clear that if Rocky retires, his family will be waiting to adopt him and provide him with the forever retirement home that he deserves.
