A shelter canine named Poppy finally got chosen after raising her puppies and waiting months for her own home. The dog had arrived at Lancaster Animal Care Center with day-old babies and spent two months caring for them. Once her puppies were old enough, Poppy stayed behind with no adoption interest. This video showed her emotional exit after Melissa Schwaigerlehner stepped in to give her a home.
Mom dog, who was the shelter’s longest resident, gets adopted
Lancaster Animal Care Center shared the video one week ago, showing Poppy’s long-awaited adoption day. The clip explained that Poppy was the shelter’s “longest resident” and “an urgent, overlooked mama.” She had raised her puppies in a kennel before waiting alone. The caption said she was “finally chosen,” adding that the day brought “happy tears and wagging tails.”
The video first showed Poppy inside the shelter, where the on-screen text described her as the “longest resident.” Another caption said she had run out of time. Then, the mood changed as Poppy met her new mom and jumped into her arms, covering her with kisses.
According to the post, Poppy had been seen and saved by Melissa Schwaigerlehner after people shared her story. Lancaster Animal Care Center also thanked Minnie’s Mutts for being ready to help if Poppy was not picked up that day. The video also thanked Michelle for making sure the mama was not left behind.
During the freedom walk, Poppy kept turning around while heading to the car. The caption said she kept making sure her new mom was still coming. That small look back made the adoption video even more emotional, as Poppy seemed unsure if the happy ending was real.
Fans loved seeing Poppy finally get her chance. One wrote, “Thank you for this bit of happiness & love!!! Over the Moon for Poppy, she found her hero.” Another added, “So happy for Poppy!! She knew she was going to be loved forever with her new Mom!” A third said, “The way she keeps looking back at you to make sure you’re still there…..oh love.”
