A case for adult dogs

When looking for canine companionship, people often opt for a puppy because, well, they're so darn cute. But many also believe adult dogs who've been abandoned or surrendered to shelters are somehow too damaged to make good family pets.

Nonsense. The shelters are bursting with perfectly good dogs who need a little of your tender loving care to make them beloved members of your family--if only people would give them a chance.

Myth: You won't bond as well if you haven't raised the dog yourself.
Reality: Not so. Any age dog can grow very attached to his person, often very quickly. What's more, you'll know just how affectionate your adult dog is when you adopt him, whereas an affectionate puppy may turn into an aloof adult.

Myth: Adult dogs up for adoption must have problems.
Reality: Dogs are abandoned for all sorts of reasons and most of the time it has nothing to do with the dog. The number one reason given for surrendering a dog is "moving." Another is "no time." While this means many shelter dogs arrive without the training they should have gotten, most problems are treatable. The ones with the most serious problems generally aren't offered for adoption.

Myth: If I get an adult dog, I can only get a mutt.
Reality: In fact, twenty-five percent of shelter dogs are purebreds, and many breed rescue groups have purebreds looking for homes. If your heart is set on a particular breed, chances are good you can find an adult dog. But--we have to ask--why wouldn't you want a mutt?

Still wondering?

If you're still trying to decide whether to adopt an adult dog, consider the advantage of knowing what you're getting. With an adult you generally know if he's good with kids, or makes a good running companion, or isn't too barky. Puppiness is adorable, to be sure, but it often masks a dog's true personality.

I love all dogs, mutts and purebreds. We had an Old English Sheepdog and a pair of German Shepherds when I was growing up, but we also had a nondescript brown dog that someone dumped on the road outside...

  • Chow Chow Australian Shepherd Mix

Tomorrow, me and my family have decided to go check out a dog, and see if he suits our family. I have been interested in him, and a few other dogs for a while, and sadly most of those dogs have been singled out. (To big, a Pit Bull, etc. I wanted the Pit, my my was against it tho) The dog we are considering is a male Chow Chow Australian Shepherd Mix. (CCASM) He is good with kids, dogs and most likely good with cats. (We have all of those) I am pretty sure what they wrote about him is true, so I am prepared for a few minor things, like what I just listed, buts thats really all. Does anyone own one of these mix breeds, and tell me what they are like so I can have a better idea? Or, if anyone has owned a Aussie and/or a Chow before, what would you think they'd act like? Any guesses are also welcomed. I know each dog is different, but I just want to get a idea of a few things I may have to deal with in the future. Oh, and he is 3 years old, and I am adopting him from a shelter, not a breeder. Shelter animals need homes much more then a fancy little lap dog... Sorry, I kind of have a thing against little dogs... I like them but they are to small for my taste, and often annoying.... Thanks!

  • Missing my everything

I lost my mini pin max just over 2 weeks ago & my life has been hell on earth. I had him since i was a little girl & i'm 18 now and i knew the time was coming but it happened too fast. we noticed he was acting strange so we took him to the vet and within 10 mins she told us lymphoma. the next day we brang him back for a check up bc he was feeling worse and the vet gave him a needle to help and as soon as we brang him home he took a turn for the worst, we rushed him back & the vet did xrays and the cancer spread to his organs making it almost impossible for him to breathe. The vets said to take him home until its time. I came home from work everyday just being so happy to see him making it one more day. Thursday March 1st i propped him up on the couch near the front window of my house to watch people go by and i kissed and said to him it was okay if he had to leave. I got picked up from work and was told he was ready to go and my mom and sister carried him to the vet and put him down. I felt immediate peace when i heard the news but i was devastated bc i begged for friday off at work so i could just cuddle and kiss him all day :'( i didnt grieve his death right and was so stressed about work and other losses that i developed severe anxiety taking me to the darkest place ive ever been. I think my grieving process is starting now bc im accepting ive been crying all the time looking at all the places he would sit and stare at me :( and i find his little hairs and just break down! i could easily say this is just as hard IF not harder then losing a human. I wouldnt wish this on anyone in the world! my other family members grieved and are starting to move on but im not & i feel so alone but they know how i feel just not to this extent. I took some time off work to gather my thought together and get healthy but i find myself getting worse i've lose all my appeitite losing almost 13 pounds in 5 days just trying to make myself eat! i become very sensitive when hearing memories and his name :( i miss him running to the door and greeting me, i miss his nails on the floor, i miss hearing his bark when the door bell rings, i miss asking him for kissing and teasing him for drinking out of the toilet. i miss even when he pooed in my room :( i would do anything to get him back :( my life feels so empty and i have no motive in life and im 18! every time happiness comes over me just for a split second i think "this feeling would last if i just has my maxi" we are getting a new dog, same bread just different features in the end of april and i hope it really helps me. If anyone has felt anxiety after the loss of their pet could you please give me some tips? please im hopeless

  • Missing My Maggie Mae Rest Easy Baby I Love You

This morning I had to let my 13 year old boxer, Maggie Mae, go. She was old but such a loyal, sweet, loving dog. I miss her so much. I feel so bad - I nudged her to go down the stairs. She got the landing, layed down and starting panting for her breath. My daughter and I took her to the Vet Emergency where the doctor told us she had a heart condition and even if we took her to a cardiologiest she might last 6 months at the most. I am stunned and saddened. Other than being old and a bit lame and acting like an old woman - she seemed fine. I knew she was getting old but like many people - you believe they will go on forever. My heart is broken and I feel so bad that I let her go. I keep wondering if I should have tried the meds but she was getting enough oxygen to help her. She raised her head only once when we came into the room and otherwise struggled for air. She leaves her sister Morgie the Boston Terrier who is a great dog but I can tell she is confused. I hope I did the right thing - I only wanted the best for my pup. She was a wonderful dog.
