Surrendered Shelter Dog Gets Sweetest Comfort When Human Reads to Him

For dogs waiting in shelters, having someone spend a little extra time with them can make an unfamiliar environment feel less lonely. Even something as simple as sitting nearby and offering affection can give a shelter dog a welcome moment of comfort. One volunteer found a particularly sweet way to lift the spirits of Oso, a Shih Tzu hoping to find his next home.

A video shared by @jsaraceno on Instagram shows shelter volunteer Julie Saraceno sitting with Oso and reading him a storybook. The clip begins with Saraceno quietly reading while Oso stays close to her, but it does not take long for the five-year-old dog to show just how much he enjoys her company. He attempts to snuggle up to her and gives her kisses as she continues reading.

Text on the video notes that “sometimes volunteering is reading to a shelter dog named Oso to cheer them up.” The interaction may have been a small part of Saraceno’s time at the shelter, but Oso appeared more than happy to have her attention.

The video then provides some background on Oso and how he came to the shelter. According to the information shared in the clip, Oso was surrendered on August 19, with “too many dogs” listed as the reason. Despite the upheaval of losing his previous home, he seemed ready to connect with people.

Saraceno said she “immediately fell in love with his underbite” and recalled that the Shih Tzu greeted her right away as though they were already friends. According to his surrender paperwork, the five-year-old dog has had two homes during his life.

There is also plenty to know about Oso beyond his adorable appearance. Saraceno explained that cats do not bother him, and he enjoys spending time outdoors. He likes playing ball and has a particular fondness for water. He will even let a sprinkler spray him while giving a high five, showing off a playful side that could make him a fun companion for the right family.

For now, Oso is looking for a permanent home where he can receive the care and companionship he deserves. He is available for adoption through the Benton Franklin Humane Society in Kennewick, Washington.
