Dior and Smokey do almost everything together, right down to keeping a little paw or shoulder touching while they walk. The two shelter dogs were surrendered after their family moved. And now they are facing an even more frightening possibility: separation.
In the video shared by @hicarsondogs, volunteers take the shelter dogs out together, put matching sun hats on them, and watch how closely they stick to each other. Dior, the older dog, is outgoing and confident, while younger Smokey keeps checking that she is nearby. Their bond is obvious from the start.
Shelter dogs surrendered by family are a ‘bonded pair’ looking for a loving home
The video opens with one volunteer taking a dog out of a kennel. Then another volunteer brings out the second dog. The message on screen states that it’s difficult enough to get one shelter dog adopted. Finding a home for a bonded pair can be much harder.
Dior and Smokey are then dressed in little sun hats while they wait outside. Once they are on their walk, they keep checking in with each other. Their heads touch, one licks the other’s face, and they stay close whenever they can.
According to the post, Dior is six, and Smokey is three. The volunteers cannot confirm that Dior is Smokey’s mother, but they believe it is possible. What they do know is that the two are inseparable. The poster describes Dior as social, quirky, and confident. Smokey is more reserved and often looks to her for reassurance. When she is nearby, he seems much more comfortable.
The volunteers also give both dogs a little spa treatment. Dior gets into the bath first, followed by Smokey. They are scrubbed, kissed, and wrapped in towels afterward, looking rather pleased with themselves. Then they go back to the kennel.
The final notice says they are scheduled to be euthanized in just a few days, which is why the rescue effort is so urgent. The post asks for help getting them out together rather than forcing either dog to lose the other.
The video of the bonded shelter dogs has received more than 30,300 likes at the time of writing. One commenter called them “2 peas in a pod.” Another hoped they could be saved together and even speculated that Dior may be Smokey’s mom. There is also rescue interest in the comments, giving this pair another reason to keep hoping.
