The little puppy who once fit beneath his dad’s chin eventually found a new job: watching over the one who raised him. In the video shared by @justgunnerstunner, it’s hard not to smile while watching those early moments of the dog dad and his pup beside the ones filmed today.
There was a time when Gunner barely let baby Lucian out of his sight, always checking on him and making sure he was okay. These days, the little pup isn’t so little anymore. Now it’s Lucian who settles beside his dad, keeping the older dog company by the door.
After dad protects him as a puppy, dog decides it’s time to return the favor
The video opens with a tiny Lucian tucked beneath Gunner’s chin, looking so small beside his father. The on-screen text reads, “Daddy used to protect me…” as the American Bully gently nuzzles the little pup before giving him a careful once-over. A milk bottle resting nearby reminds us that Lucian had lost his mama when he was still just a baby.
More memories come on screen as Lucian grows. In one clip, he toddles over to sniff Gunner’s face, only for his dad to immediately check him over in return. Another shows them stretched out together on the bed, completely at ease. It’s easy to see that keeping an eye on his son had simply become part of Gunner’s day.
Then the timeline catches up to the present. Lucian is all grown up now, sitting confidently in the doorway while Gunner settles just behind him. The caption changes to, “Now I can protect him,” and suddenly those earlier scenes take on a whole new meaning. The father and son keep watch together, nap side by side, and seem happiest whenever they’re close enough to lean on one another.
The heartwarming video has already got more than 27,000 likes, with viewers loving how naturally their roles of the dog dad and the pup have evolved over the years. One person called them “the most handsome father/son duo on IG,” while another said their relationship was “absolutely amazing.” Watching a dog grow from the tiny puppy nestled against dad into the companion sitting taller but faithfully beside him is really special.
