Video: Bully Steps in as Dad to Dachshund’s Newborn Babies

They say it takes a village to raise a litter — or, in this case, one very large, very gentle roommate. In a video shared by @justgunnerstunner, we see Gunner, the XL American Bully, decide that Tokyo, the family’s little Dachshund, and her newborn babies were now his responsibility, too.

Before Tokyo’s puppies even opened their eyes, they already had him watching over them. From keeping the Doxie company during 3 a.m. feeds to letting the tiny pups crawl all over him, this “banned breed” proves he’s really just a wholesome dad in disguise.

Dachshund’s newborn babies treat Bully as their dad in video

With over 634K likes, this video of an XL Bully with Dachshund babies got a deep, collective “aww” on the internet — and it’s really not surprising. It opens with Tokyo curled protectively around one of her puppies, cleaning and fussing over them.

The text reads, “Our sausage dog has babies, she thought she’d be doing it all alone…” But then the video cuts to Gunner, standing just outside her enclosure, watching over her like a quiet sentinel. He’s letting her know she can always count on him to be around.

The next few clips show the Bully step into the role of dad and take it very seriously. He helps her “keep them clean,” aware of his giant size but careful all the same. He’s there during late-night feeds, lying beside Tokyo as she drifts to sleep, her newborns tucked safely next to her. The narration reads, “It’s like he knew she needed him.”

As the puppies grow, so does their fondness. One pup crawls toward Gunner’s bed, curling up on the edge of his blanket. Another nestles next to his arm like it’s the safest spot in the world. The clip ends with Aiko — the puppy they kept — resting against him in a patch of sunlight before they both doze off together. The emotional in-video text tells us, “To her, he isn’t just a friend… He’s her dad.”

Tokyo’s puppies sure have learned what love looks like, thanks to the “dad who stepped up.” And the comments section is just as heartwarming. One viewer wrote, “Not every man was meant to be a father, but Gunner most certainly was.” Another added, “Gunner’s heart is bigger than he is.”
