A dog managed to turn an ordinary Monday into the kind of rescue call volunteers don’t get every day. According to reporting by The Guardian, crews in Batemans Bay, Australia, were alerted after a dog was swept from coastal rocks and ended up struggling in the ocean. Before rescuers could even reach him, the determined pup had already paddled his way across the bay and reached nearby Snapper Island.
Jet ski helps rescue team save dog’s life after he was swept into the ocean
By the time Marine Rescue NSW volunteers arrived, the dog had created a new problem for everyone trying to help him. He was no longer in open water. Instead, he was on a rocky island that proved surprisingly difficult to access. Rod Ingamells, commander of the Batemans Bay unit, told The Guardian that the situation looked much simpler at first.
One volunteer, described as a dog lover, got into the water to try and reach him. The dog, though, had other ideas and reportedly disappeared around the opposite side of the island. So, the chase continued.
The conditions around Snapper Island were rough enough that larger rescue boats struggled to get close. Luckily, the team had recently been training with new rescue watercraft. After working around the coastline for about an hour, one volunteer finally managed to coax the dog onto the back of a jet ski near Smugglers Cove. This ended up becoming a milestone moment for the rescue craft.
Ingamells said lightheartedly to The Guardian that after months of training, its first successful rescue turned out to be “a puppy instead of a person.”
The dog is believed to be named Oscar, though officials had not formally identified him at the time. He was taken to a veterinarian after picking up cuts on his paws from the rocky terrain. Local authorities later confirmed that owners had come forward, and efforts were underway to reunite him with his family.
The best detail might be what happened behind the scenes. Ingamells told The Guardian that people across the bay kept offering help over the radio. For a while, it sounded like half the community wanted to join the rescue, but it didn’t come to that.
