Video: Dog Guards Dad to Stop Her Furry Sister From Getting Alone Time With Him

Anyone with more than one dog knows that sibling rivalry doesn’t stop with humans. Whether it’s toys, treats, or the best seat in the house, pets can be just as competitive as kids. But nothing sparks jealousy faster than one pup getting extra cuddle time with their favorite person. In a new video, a dog proved that she takes “dad’s favorite” status very seriously, and she wasn’t about to let her younger sister change that.

Ruby and Red, two German Shepherd siblings, live together in the same household and share nearly everything — except when it comes to their dad’s undivided attention. In a video posted to @rubythepuppydog, Ruby is shown lounging happily with her dad, who’s stretched out on the couch. She is clearly enjoying the one-on-one playtime, wagging her tail and soaking up every bit of affection.

That calm scene changes quickly when Red, her younger sibling, trots into view. The younger dog makes a move to climb closer, hoping to squeeze in on the fun. Ruby, however, isn’t having it. She turns her head sharply, lets out a firm bark, and fixes her sister with a look that seems to say, “Not right now, this is my time.”

Red tries again in hopes her persistence will win her a share of the spotlight. Still, Ruby plants herself firmly, blocking the path and even leaning closer to her dad to mark her claim. The text overlay on the clip reads, “She doesn’t want to share her dad’s attention with her little sister.”The video ends with Ruby keeping her ground, while Red seems to reluctantly back off, at least for the moment.

German Shepherds, like Ruby and Red, are known for their loyalty and protective instincts. Originally bred as working dogs, they’re intelligent, highly trainable, and deeply attached to their families. That combination makes them excellent companions but also prone to being territorial about their loved ones. As such, it is not unusual for them to stake a claim on “their person” in the household.
