DNA tests for dogs have become quite popular among dog owners in 2025 as they not only help in finding the exact breed of the canine but also help in discovering health risks, family history, and behavioral issues of the furry baby. The tests work due to the relation between these factors and the dog’s genetic make-up.
A recent dog DNA test from Embark Veterinary, which came from a research partnership with Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM), gives reports that could improve the lives of canines.
Owners continue to search for Dog DNA tests
As 2025 goes on, dog owners across the globe continue to look for good dog DNA tests to provide their furry babies with a healthy and happy life. As reported by the Cornell Chronicle, Embark Veterinary’s dog DNA test uses over 230,000 genetic markers. It is for the purpose of testing each sample for over 270 genetic health risks, 55 traits, and 350 breeds and generating useful data.
Embark Veterinary has cultivated the biggest genetic database in the world since its foundation in 2015. With the help of DNA tests from a total of 2.5 million dogs, they give valuable findings for researchers and dog owners alike.
An associate professor of biomedical sciences in CVM, Adam Boyko, said, “When you have a big dataset, you’ve invariably got some cases for almost every disease.” Boyko continued, “You can use that to help the researchers with their study and increase the sample size and power or provide a validation cohort.”
What are Dog DNA tests and what do they show?
Dog DNA tests are made to detect a canine’s genetic makeup to disclose breed composition, possible health factors, and even some of the dog’s personality traits and features. In a recent viral Reddit post, a human parent of a dog named Smokey revealed the canine’s astounding DNA test results.
The post read, “We adopted our second pup in January. He was a stray in rough shape.” It continued, “Everywhere we go people love to guess what he is (weenie dog, pointer, beagle, etc). Our vet said he was probably a perfect little mutt.” The Reddit post then disclosed, “We got his DNA test back.” “And apparently he’s full beagle?” questioned the owner of the dog in utter surprise.
