Can Dogs Eat Mustard? Is Mustard Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat mustard? You might have wondered this if your dog tries to sneak a taste while you’re slathering some mustard on a burger in the kitchen or while you’re outside enjoying a barbecue. If humans can eat mustard, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t safely eat mustard. This is because mustard seeds are toxic for dogs to ingest. You risk bringing on diarrhea, vomiting, and other stomach issues if you let your dog eat mustard.

Here’s what you need to know about mustard and dogs.

Why Is Mustard Bad For Dogs?

Mustard is not safe for dogs because the main ingredient in mustard, the actual mustard seeds, are toxic to dogs.

If you discover that your dog has licked a tiny bit of mustard off your plate, there’s a good chance that they’ll be okay. But consuming a more considerable amount of mustard is likely to lead to a number of health issues and dangers.

It’s also worth noting that if you’re using store bought mustard, it may also contain other extra ingredients that are equally as harmful for dogs to consume.

If your dog eats mustard, it can lead to their stomach and intestinal tract becoming inflamed, a condition known as gastroenteritis. Some of the other most common symptoms include diarrhea, pain in the abdominal area, and vomiting.

Call your veterinarian for further advice if your dog seems to be experiencing a very bad reaction to eating mustard.

It’s also important to note that the size of your dog can make a difference in terms of how severely mustard will adversely affect them.
