In Costa Rica there's a place called "Territorio de Zaguates" or "Land of Strays," and it's a paradise for dog lovers. It's a free range refuge for over 900 pups, and they're all adoptable. They have fresh water, beds in a sheltered structure, and plenty of volunteers who take care of them and give them baths. It's a completely no kill shelter where dogs can live out in the open and roam where they please, all while getting the love and care they need.

Visitors are allowed to come and meet the pups, go on hikes, and even adopt any dog who chooses them. But there's no pressure to adopt. The dogs are provided with everything they need to be happy and healthy. They're all given their own names and unique breed titles, like the bunny-tailed shepterrier or the shaggy shepherd dachspaniel. Each pup is an individual.

The refuge hopes to encourage people to adopt mutts and to help people realize that a mixed-breed has its own, unique characteristics. All dogs are just as desirable as purebreds. They hope that this will help reduce the demand that keeps puppy mills and irresponsible breeders in operation. And the sanctuary provides an interesting way to meet a wide variety of dogs before adopting. It sounds like heaven to me!
