Netflix’s “Dogs,” a docuseries created by award-winning filmmakers, brings viewers on emotional journeys featuring beloved canine companions. Each episode celebrates the stories between an individual and their four-legged friend.

In Season 1 Episode 5 of Netflix’s “Dogs,” “Territorio de Zaguates,” Lya and Álvaro dedicate their lives to giving shelter and care to hundreds of abandoned dogs in Costa Rica. The couple now home more than 1200 stray dogs on a 300 acre free-range sanctuary called El Territorio de Zaguates — Land of the Strays. While their goal is to find homes for the dogs, many will spend the remainder of their lives running on the grassy fields.

A Home for the Forgotten in Netflix’s ‘Dogs’

There are an estimated two million stray dogs in Costa Rica. The stray dogs, known as “Zaguates,” run throughout the streets.  Álvaro explains the term “Zaguates” not only refers to the dogs as strays, but classifies them as creatures of low-value. The name is one that demeans the animals, calling them filthy or ugly. Pictured are dogs in the streets that appear emaciated, disabled, or suffering from illness and conditions such as mange. At times, the episode footage can be difficult to watch. One dog is missing a leg. Another, an eye. The condition of the animals and rampant abandonment of pets caused Álvaro Saumet and Lya Battle to found a sanctuary. With great faith and few resources, the team opened El Territorio de Zaguates in 2007.

The situation for stray dogs in Costa Rica is desperate. A law was passed that brought fines and potential imprisonment to anyone found with a dog in poor conditions. Unable to adequately provide for the dogs due to poverty, people discarded their pets. Funded primarily on donations, the shelter works to find new homes for the abandoned dogs. The shelter staff provide medical attention, food, grooming, exercise, and plenty of petting.

El Territorio de Zaguates currently houses over 1200 dogs. Each day, Álvaro and Lya receive calls regarding abandoned dogs. At times, the shelter is beyond capacity and the team are unable to offer aid. Despite their exhaustion, Álvaro and Lya continue because they believe in the importance of not allowing an animal to suffer. Outside the walls of the sanctuary, death is certain. Within, there is hope. With time and attention, many dogs are nursed back to health and find new homes. El Territorio de Zaguates continues to work to lower their animal population to a number that is sustainable.

Action through Compassion

Season 1 Episode 5 of Netflix’s “Dogs” is an impactful, moving journey to the front lines of the rescue operation in Costa Rica. The mission began with Lya’s great love for animals and caring for the creatures that are often overlooked or forgotten. Álvaro, Lya, and the caretakers at El Territorio de Zaguates lead with this passion, working to make sure that no animal lives without an identity. Every dog has a name.

Like El Territorio de Zaguates, many rescue organizations and shelters are in need of resources. After multiple years of low adoptions, many shelters are suffering from packed facilities and overcrowding. Animal shelters are often overfull, understaffed, and in need of assistance. You can register as an animal foster, volunteer service hours, donate financially, or collect donations such as food, toys, and supplies. Remember that it is always best to rescue a canine companion, as many unwanted dogs face the risk of euthanasia. You can donate to El Territorio de Zaguates here.
