Sometimes, all it takes for an overlooked dog to get adopted is a little internet fame. Such was the case for Sky, a 3-year-old Virginia dog who was completely ignored by potential adopters at Stafford County Animal Shelter…until a Facebook post about her went viral.

Virginia Dog Overlooked at Shelter

Sky arrived at the shelter in November 2022 but as of last month, still hadn’t received a single visit or adoption application. At the time, she was one of the longest-term residents at the facility.

Joe Bice, captain of the Stafford County Animal Shelter, told WSET that people seeking pets disregarded her because of the need for Sky to be the only dog in the home.

After months of Sky fruitlessly waiting for a forever home, the shelter posted about the sad situation on Facebook.

“No one has sent an email. No one has called about her. No one asks to visit with her. We have posted her multiple times … Still nothing,” the shelter shared in a Facebook post alongside a photo of Sky in her kennel.

“She does great with all people and loves going for walks with our volunteers,” the post continued. “We are confident she will make someone very happy, she just needs a chance!”

Viral Post Leads to Adoption

The post quickly went viral, garnering over 68,000 shares and 2,900 comments.

“The phone has been ringing off the hook all morning, a ton of messages and so many we can’t even get back to them,” Bice told WSET about the pup’s 15 minutes of internet fame.

It only took 24 hours before Sky was adopted. Her new mom is Donna Crowder. She adopted the pup for her son, Joseph.

“We have been in the market for a dog, and when they said she was good with kids, I said, ‘OK, I will make the drive,” Crowder told WSET.

Stafford County Animal Shelter updated Facebook followers about the good news.

“It happened!! It finally happened!!! Sky was adopted !!! We have received more inquiries than we could respond to, so we apologize if you were left unanswered. We are hoping this answers all questions and make your day!” the shelter shared in addition to a pic of Sky with her new family. “Thank you so much for making the drive to us to take this girl home. Good luck, Sky !!!”

Sky has once again proven that good things come to those who wait…and those who go viral?
