The eight-year-old German Shepherd mix had been abandoned and spent weeks at the shelter, where she struggled through the intense heat while waiting for someone to choose her.

Lucy was placed at risk of euthanasia and was reportedly set to be the next dog euthanized. Her future changed when rescuers and supporters stepped in before it was too late.

The footage captures Lucy being led out of the shelter for what would be her final time. She is then seen getting into the backseat of a car, beginning a journey that will take her far away from the kennel where she had spent the past several weeks. Her destination is Louisiana, where she is expected to begin life with her new forever family.

Lucy was saved with the help of Del Mar Dog Rescue, which backed her as the rescue organization. Meanwhile, Muddy Pug Farm & Sanctuary sponsored the transportation needed to get her to her new home. Their efforts meant Lucy did not have to spend another day waiting for her fate to be decided.

According to the post, the furry baby had been overlooked day after day despite being in need of a home. She had already experienced the loss of the people who were supposed to care for her. Her time at the shelter only added to the uncertainty. The prolonged stay also meant enduring weeks of extremely hot weather while living in a stressful shelter environment.

That all changed when enough people came together to give her a way out. As Lucy settled into the car, she may not have known that she would never need to return to the shelter. For the people who helped save her, however, the significance of that final walk was unmistakable.

After being overlooked, Lucy now has the opportunity to spend her later years in a home that wants her. Her rescuers are celebrating the fact that the senior dog is finally safe and, this time, she will not be abandoned again.
