Lab Survivor Beagle Is Learning That Hands Can Bring Treats, Love & Nothing To Fear

Taking a treat from someone’s hand sounds like the easiest thing in the world for a dog, but Delilah is still deciding whether she can trust it. This lab-survivor Beagle watches the treat from a few steps away and slowly edges forward. In the video from @meraclepaws, she stretches her neck toward the treat without moving her feet.

When another dog comes over, Delilah backs off again. Still, her tail keeps wagging. She tries again, gets just close enough to take the treat, and quickly runs off with it. She does not get very far, but she gets a little closer than before.

The Instagram video shows Delilah keeping a comfortable distance from the person holding the treat. She comes when she is called, then stops just short of the hand. Her nose moves forward while the rest of her stays put. But that little reach is enough to show she is considering it. The text on screen says she is learning that hands can be safe, and her wagging tail offers another hopeful sign.

A second dog comes into the frame and spots the treat too. Delilah backs off and waits until she is called again. This time, she gets a little closer. She approaches, still cautious, and stretches forward until she can just about grab the treat.

The moment it is in her mouth, she turns and runs off with it. For Delilah, coming that close and taking the treat is a pretty big first. The message on screen puts it plainly: “It takes time. Love. Patience. And eventually… trust.”

Her story is part of the wider rescue work around the Beagles who came out of Ridglan Farms. Other dogs from that rescue have been settling into foster and forever homes, learning the simple things many dogs get to take for granted.

Hundreds of people have liked the video and left encouraging messages for Delilah. One person called the moment “big,” while another wrote that she deserves the whole world. There is still a long way to go, but this lab-survivor Beagle is getting there in her own time.
