Once-Caged Rescue Dog Never Had a Toy So She Now Spends Her Days Collecting Them

Life can look very different for rescue animals once they leave behind difficult circumstances. Everyday comforts that many pets enjoy without a second thought can become entirely new experiences for dogs who have spent years without them. A recent video shared by @meraclepaws captures one such transformation through the story of Delilah. After spending years without a single toy of her own, the rescue dog now surrounds herself with them every chance she gets.

Rescue dog who never had a toy spends days collecting and nights cuddling with them

According to the video, Delilah spent five years living in a cage at Ridglan Farms, a Wisconsin breeding and research facility. During that time, she never had access to toys. While many pet parents think little of tossing a tennis ball or stuffed animal to their pups, those experiences were completely absent from Delilah’s life. That changed after her rescue.

The video shows Delilah surrounded by an impressive collection of toys, sprawled across her bed and scattered around her resting area. Some are tucked beneath her paws, while others are arranged around her as she sleeps. “For 5 years, Delilah lived in a cage at Ridglan and never had a toy,” the caption explains. “Now she spends her days collecting them and her nights cuddling with them.”

Delilah is one of the thousands of Beagles connected to Ridglan Farms, which has been at the center of animal welfare concerns and public scrutiny. Earlier this year, Big Dog Ranch Rescue and the Center for a Humane Economy announced an agreement to purchase nearly 1,500 Beagles from the facility. The rescue operation followed years of campaigning by activists who sought to see the dogs placed in homes rather than remain within the breeding system.

Speaking to the Associated Press in April, Big Dog Ranch Rescue founder Lauree Simmons said the effort was “a very big win” for the animals. Many of the rescued dogs required veterinary care and basic training to adapt to everyday life.

For Delilah, that adjustment appears to include discovering the simple joy of having toys of her own. As the video’s caption notes, “Some things we take for granted mean everything to a dog who’s never had them before.” Judging by her growing collection, Delilah is making the most of every one of them.
