Shelter Dog Wakes up Thinking That Kennel Is Her Life Now, Until Humans Change Her Life

It wasn’t too long ago that Duchess was waking up inside a kennel every day. She believed kennel life was simply normal for a shelter dog and that forever humans were a myth. These days, though, she’s far more interested in sticking her nose out of a car window and enjoying the ride with her family.

The Instagram handle @dogpackdispatch captured Duchess standing in the back seat, enjoying every second of the drive. Considering where she started, those simple moments feel pretty special. The caption points out that moments like these are exactly what make rescue stories so rewarding.

Shelter dog who once thought the kennel was her life now enjoys car rides with her humans

The entire video follows Duchess as she happily balances on her hind legs in the back seat with the window rolled halfway down. Her ears flap in the breeze while she takes in everything rushing past outside. It’s a simple clip, yet it says plenty about how quickly life can change when the right family finally shows up.

As Duchess enjoys the ride, the on-screen text asks viewers to imagine a time when she thought the shelter would always be her home. Then, little by little, hope turns into something real. A family says yes, the car ride home begins, and suddenly the future looks completely different. A rolled-down window probably doesn’t seem like much, but for Duchess it comes after days when even stepping outside wasn’t guaranteed.

Scroll down a little more on the family’s handle, and you learn a little more of Duchess’ story. She first caught the family’s attention during an adoption event outside a pet store. Their sons couldn’t stop thinking about her, and after meeting the family’s other rescue dogs, she fit in almost immediately. It didn’t take long before Ava had a new name, Duchess, and was settling into life with her new furry siblings.

The post has already earned plenty of love from viewers, with one simply writing, “Bless their hearts.” For one former shelter dog, kennel life is now just a memory, replaced by road trips, open windows, and humans who wouldn’t dream of leaving her behind.
