Shelter Dog Had Accepted His Cruel Fate, Until He Saw His Life Change

Poor Duke was busy keeping an eye on the hallway outside his kennel, completely unaware that his search was already over. Shared by @helpingforgottenpaws, the shelter dog‘s video had reached a woman nine hours away. And she had already decided he was coming home. Meanwhile, Duke was still wagging at people passing by and waiting for someone to notice him. But every heartbreak that had brought him to the shelter was finally about to lead him somewhere better.

After multiple losses, shelter dog was declining before he was ultimately chosen

The video begins with Duke standing inside his kennel, looking curiously into the camera. The on-screen text reveals the secret he doesn’t know yet: someone has already chosen him. According to the caption, Duke’s road to this moment had been especially difficult. He lost his home after his family lost theirs. Moreover, he was separated from his bonded sister, and then endured two failed adoptions in less than 24 hours.

With every setback, the volunteer behind the post watched him become a little quieter. She even admitted she wasn’t sure he would ever make it out of the shelter. The video then follows Duke as he is clipped onto a leash and led outside for what turns out to be the last time. The moment the shelter door opens, he excitedly heads toward the parking lot, blissfully unaware that this is the beginning of his new life.

Duke soon meets his new family and happily jumps into the back seat of their car, where a Squishmallow toy is already waiting for him. The volunteer waves goodbye as the family begins the long drive from Kansas to Indiana.

The final photos show Duke stretched out at home, relaxing in the yard and smiling beside the people who promised this time would be forever.
