Adopting a rescue dog is one of the greatest joys in life. Still, some have reservations about adopting over going to a breeder.

Rescue dogs often come with little to no known history other than where they were found before arriving at the shelter. Some worry that a dog they may adopt has learned poor or violent behavior at one point in their life. In addition to this, the fact that a lot of shelter dogs are bully breeds only makes this hesitation worse.

However, there is no reason to worry that a shelter dog will be any more prone to violence or bad behavior than a dog bought from a breeder. It’s all about the time and effort you put into training your pup, how well their personality fits in with your lifestyle, and — most importantly — the love you give them.

Here are three reasons to adopt a rescue dog instead of going to a breeder.

1. They love you. Like, a lot.

There really isn’t anything like a rescue dog’s love. A lot of them know what it’s like to be outcasted and without food and shelter. Some come from places that were terrifying for them. Your safe space for them is the best thing they’ve ever known, and they love love love you for it.

2. Mutts are the best.

There’s no reason to pay through the nose for a designer or purebred dog if you just want a companion. There are loads of mutts in shelters who would love to be your snuggle buddy or running partner. In general, mutts have better temperaments and less health issues than designer or purebred dogs due to genetic variation. Unless you’re looking to enter your pup into a dog show or need a dog who can perform a specific task, like swimming or ratting, mutts are the way to go.

3. They need your help.

Unfortunately, during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, many thought they wanted dogs during lockdown. However, once lockdowns were lifted, the dogs went back to the shelter. Thus, shelters are overcrowded with dogs needing homes. If you’re looking to get a dog purely for companionship, rescue is the right breed. We implore you to adopt, don’t shop for a furry friend.
