January is National Train Your Dog Month, which is good news for the dogs who love to please their parents. For dogs who aren’t so trick-savvy, they might offer a look of disdain when they’re asked for their paw for the millionth time. Regardless of where your dog falls on this spectrum, there are certain things that all dogs should know — sit, stay, and wait are musts for pups.

On the other hand, there are some tricks that are just downright impressive. Here are five cool TikTok dog tricks to teach your pup for National Train Your Dog Month.

“Shy”

@happy_aussie_riley Does your dog know this trick? #dogtrick #hundetræning #dogtraining #dogtricktutorial #dogs ♬ Music For a Sushi Restaurant – Harry Styles

“Shy” is an adorable trick where your pup holds their paw over their face as if they are embarrassed. As seen in the TikTok above, this one isn’t too hard to teach, especially for treat-motivated dogs. It does involved placing a scrunchy over your dog’s snout, so if they’re not comfortable with that, you may want to skip out on this.

“Hold It”

“Hold it” is a more advanced trick, as it requires your dog to respond to a clicker. As Jasper shows us in the TikTok above, this trick involves your pup “holding” something in their mouth. With enough practice, maybe your dog will start helping you unload the groceries.

“Bang”

The “Bang” trick, also known as “Stick Em Up,” is for those dogs who were in Westerns in another life. This is a two-part trick, as shown in the TikTok. Also mentioned in the TikTok, this trick requires a dog to “stand” on their hind legs; this isn’t good for dogs who have or are at risk for developing hip problems. For these dogs, a simple “play dead” will suffice.

“The Burrito”

If your dog isn’t able to perform any of these next-level TikTok dog tricks, don’t sweat it and stick to the basics. You can’t go wrong with a good old fashioned “roll over” or “shake.”
