Storm, a female terrier mix, has spent 540 days waiting for a forever home at the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in Wantagh, New York. She arrived at the shelter as an owner surrender after her family said she was not getting along with another dog in the household.
An Instagram video shared by @adopt_storm_and_friends shows Storm quietly lying inside her kennel, while the heartbreaking caption reveals that she still has not had a single meet-and-greet with a potential adopter.
Shelter dog has spent 540 days inside her kennel, desperately waiting for someone to choose her
The video begins with a painful line on-screen with Storm in her kennel. It says, “540 DAYS. And still nobody has come for Storm.” The next frames explain that her family surrendered her to the town shelter because she was not getting along with the other dog in the home.
The reel then moves through Storm’s long wait. One caption says, “Maybe they thought she’d be adopted quickly.” Another says, “But 540 days later…” before showing her still curled on blankets behind kennel walls. The shelter said the furry baby has not had a single meet-and-greet in all that time.
Storm is shy and needs time to warm up. The post said that once she feels comfortable, she deserves a chance to show who she really is. She needs to be the only dog in the home, but she has passed her cat test at the shelter. Her bio adds more about the right match. Storm knows basic cues like “sit” and “come.”
She does best in a quiet, structured, adult-only home. The shelter also noted that experienced adopters would help her feel secure through patience, routine, and positive reinforcement. The final frame says, “SAVE STORM. Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter, Wantagh, New York.” The post asked people not to let her become one of the shelter’s longest residents.
Naturally, viewers filled the comments with concern. One wrote, “May Storm get adopted by a kind, loving person very very soon????” Another added, “Please, please adopt this precious baby, open your heart and home for this child?????️?️?️” Others wrote, “Sweet doggo needs the best home ASAP” and “Hang in there beautiful girl ❤️”
