Most ‘Fearful, Shutdown’ Dog Slowly Learns How To Be a Dog Again in Heartwarming Video

A recent Instagram video shows a Beagle sitting quietly in the yard, looking like he’s always been comfortable in those surroundings. However, this previously-shutdown dog once spent weeks believing the safest place was hidden away from everyone. Shared by @hera_the_maligator, the video follows Elroy doing everyday things that now fill his life. Each one carries a little more meaning as there was a time when he couldn’t bring himself to do any of them.

The first clip shows Elroy posing for the camera as the on-screen text reads, “Things my fearful foster Beagle does now that once felt impossible…” The next few clips are a collection of small moments, all of which add up bit by bit.

Elroy first stretches out on the deck while his foster mom enjoys her morning coffee. He then sits comfortably on the patio instead of searching for somewhere to disappear. Next, he can be seen tumbling and rolling around with his foster brother.

In other moments, Elroy keeps peeking around the corner to make sure his foster mom is still nearby. It’s a small habit, but it says plenty about how much trust he’s built. Later, he joins the rest of the pack at the fence for a round of barking, happily shreds a piece of paper, tears around the yard with a burst of zoomies, and curls up beside his foster mom for a nap.

Then comes the sweetest scene. The words on screen read, “No longer has to hide to feel safe,” as Elroy gently rests his chin on her leg. For a formerly-shutdown dog who once spent his days tucked away in corners, that simple choice shows great progress.

His foster mom shared that the last 68 days haven’t always felt dramatic. Some weeks brought obvious progress, while others seemed almost unchanged. Looking back, though, every step mattered. Earlier posts explained that Elroy, a Ridglan Beagle, arrived as one of the rescue‘s most fearful dogs. However, all of that is behind him now.

The video has already picked up more than 27,000 likes, with many viewers saying they’ve loved watching Elroy slowly come out of his shell. Others shared stories of rescued Beagles finding confidence in much the same way.
