Human Learns Shelter Dog They Once Met Was Returned Twice but Still Refuses To Give up on Love

When one volunteer walked past Waffle’s kennel, she wasn’t just seeing another shelter dog waiting for adoption. She was seeing an old friend. The last time they met was in May 2025, and despite everything that had happened since, including two failed adoptions and more than 450 days spent cycling in and out of the shelter, Waffle still greeted people with the same happy, loving spirit. The emotional reunion, shared on Instagram, has struck a chord with animal lovers who say the affectionate pup deserves far more than life behind kennel bars.

Shelter dog reunites with human he met long ago and shows exactly why he deserves love

The video opens with Waffle sitting quietly inside his kennel at the Associated Humane Society in Newark, New Jersey. The text on the screen explains the heartbreaking reality behind his story: “I met Waffle in May 2025. Since then, he’s been adopted & returned twice. He’s spent 450+ days in and out of the shelter, yet he still loves every single person who walks by him.”

According to the caption, Waffle is about 3 years old and remains the same playful, affectionate dog despite everything he has endured. The volunteer described him as “a silly, loving, friendly pup” and urged people to consider meeting him at the Associated Humane Society in Newark, New Jersey. Rather than shutting down after being returned to the shelter twice, Waffle continues to welcome every visitor with enthusiasm.

Waffle’s story quickly prompted an outpouring of support from viewers saddened by his repeated returns. One user wrote, “It breaks my heart when these poor babies who’ve waited so long for a home get returned to the shelter.” Another commented, “Breaks my heart. He deserves so much better.” One viewer added, “I pray for Waffle that he may find a beautiful loving owner to take care of him, God bless him amen.” Another wrote, “This handsome doggo is looking for a forever home and absolutely deserves the best family.”
