You might assume that a rescue dog whose story reached millions of people online would have found his human by now. Unfortunately, that’s not always how viral moments play out. Damon, a 5-year-old rescue dog, won hearts after a video showed him quietly playing by himself in his kennel. Months later, he’s still waiting for someone to make him part of their family.
Human once saw rescue dog play by himself in the kennel and changed his life
The latest video was posted by Instagram user @sarahthedogtrainer, who first introduced her followers to Damon during a visit to the rescue. The 5-year-old dog stood out immediately because he had found his own way to pass the time. While visiting the shelter’s play area, the trainer noticed Damon happily kicking around a football by himself. Even when she arrived, he barely acknowledged her presence, choosing instead to continue playing alone.
Watching the interaction unfold, she couldn’t help but wonder whether years of living in a shelter had shaped the way he viewed people. In the caption of that earlier video, she reflected on what she believed Damon had come to expect from life, writing, “He learned that no one stays. That everything ends the same.”
The emotional video quickly gained widespread attention, with millions of people watching Damon’s story. Yet despite the overwhelming response, the rescue dog is still waiting for someone to adopt him.
Wanting to meet him herself after seeing his story gain so much attention, the trainer returned to spend time with him. This visit revealed a playful, affectionate side that viewers had only glimpsed before.
The video shows Damon eagerly chasing after a ball as the pair play fetch outdoors. Every throw is met with excitement as he races after it before happily returning for another turn. The trainer says he is exactly as wonderful as people imagined. In the caption, she described Damon as “sweet, joyful, and clever,” adding that he has historically been non-reactive and is “down for all the adventures.” She also called him “a doll” and said he is simply fun to have around.
Despite those qualities, Damon continues to live in a kennel. According to the post, Damon is currently at Castoff Pet Rescue, where he continues to wait for the person who will finally turn his long stay into a fresh start.
