You might think a pup refusing food is a matter of preference, but that isn’t always the case. In a video, a shelter dog named Kermit shows a symptom of overwhelming stress. A volunteer at the Maui Humane Society recently shared an emotional update explaining how life in the shelter has taken a visible toll on his health.
Shelter dog loses significant weight after suffering from ‘severe shelter stress’
Cassondra Christman recently posted an update on Kermit after noticing a heartbreaking change in his condition. In the video, she shares that she had “learned something heartbreaking about Kermit.” Later, she reveals that the five-year-old pup had lost a considerable amount of weight over the past several weeks.
The footage shows Christman sitting with Kermit inside his kennel and patiently hand-feeding him. While some may assume he is simply being “picky” with his food, she explained that the reality is far more serious.
In the caption accompanying the video, Christman said Kermit is barely eating because the stress of shelter life has taken a physical toll on him. “His body,” she shared, “has been stuck in survival mode for so long.” As a result, even finding the energy and focus to eat has become a challenge for the pup.
To help address the issue, the shelter has doubled the amount of food offered to Kermit while staff continues to monitor his progress. Even so, Christman suggested that what he needs most is a break from the kennel environment itself.
She explained that Kermit shows a completely different side of his personality whenever he gets the opportunity to decompress outside the shelter. Away from the constant stress, he sleeps soundly, happily plays with toys, and enjoys cuddling with people.
For Christman, those moments are a clear indication that Kermit is not defined by the anxious behavior he displays in his kennel. Instead, she believes the shelter environment is preventing him from showing his true personality. The volunteer is now hoping someone will step forward to foster or adopt him before his situation becomes even more urgent.
