Shelter Dog Lets Her Personality Shine Once She’s Outside the Kennel

A shy Boxer mix named Courage is capturing attention online after shelter staff shared her remarkable journey from a terrified newcomer who needed people to carry her everywhere to a dog slowly learning to trust the world around her. Sometimes, the dogs that need the most time end up stealing the most hearts. While Courage still has a long way to go, shelter staff say the glimpses of her true personality have already convinced them that she will make an incredible companion for the right family.

In the video, staff members reflect on the shelter dog, Courage’s journey, while showing both her struggles and her small victories. The timid Boxer mix initially appears overwhelmed by her surroundings, but the footage gradually reveals a different side of her as caregivers work to earn her trust. According to Animal Friends of the Valleys, Courage arrived at the shelter extremely frightened. Staff explained that when she first arrived, she was so nervous they often had to carry her from place to place.

The most hopeful part of Courage’s story begins when shelter staff take her out of her kennel and give her space to relax. Away from the stressful kennel environment, the Boxer mix begins to show her true personality. Staff members Phil and Sharyl help her build confidence with patience, gentle encouragement, and plenty of treats. In the video, Phil crouches near Courage and offers her treats while letting her approach on her own terms. Little by little, she becomes more comfortable and starts engaging with the people around her.

The shelter explained that she first needed to learn to trust the people around her. Courage then began turning to the people helping her for comfort. In one heartwarming moment, she sat close to a staff member on the floor and leaned into them, seeking the love, comfort, and reassurance she needed.

The shelter believes she will thrive once she finds a permanent home where she can continue building confidence outside the stress of kennel life. “It doesn’t have to be this way,” the organization wrote, expressing hope that the right adopter will recognize her potential and give her the opportunity she deserves. The video was shared by Animal Friends of the Valleys (@animalfriendsofthevalleys), an animal shelter based in Wildomar, California.
