Nothing beats the electric atmosphere of the NHL hockey playoffs except maybe a pack of incredibly enthusiastic puppies sliding across the ice. A ridiculously cute update posted by the official NHL Instagram account has sports fans ditching their usual team loyalties. Ahead of its premiere, the league is officially bringing back the beloved NHL Stanley Pup competition to help shelter animals find their forever homes. This amazing special features a brand-new lineup of 32 adoptable dogs ready to go to their forever homes.
NHL’s rescue dog competition Stanley Pup returns with new set of furry participants
A newly released promo video by @nhl shows these clumsy athletes charging out of a miniature tunnel directly onto the rink. Some look incredibly excited while others seem a bit unsure about the bright arena lights. But the crowd erupts into wild applause for every single one of them.
The clip serves as a preview for this year’s NHL Stanley Pup, which returns on June 8. According to a USA Today report, all 32 NHL teams will once again be represented by adoptable rescue dogs competing in the fan-favorite special. And really, some of the names alone deserve their own trophy.
Among the participants are Jack Chews, Matthew Schaefurry, Macklin Celewienie, Jack Eichowl, and Seth Arfis. The playful hockey-inspired names immediately caught viewers’ attention, with several commenters already picking favorites before the event has even aired.
The NHL Stanley Pup premiere is about more than cute dogs, though. According to USA Today, many of the canine participants will be available for adoption through the league’s partner organization, Brandywine Valley SPCA. That mission has become a huge part of why the event continues to resonate with fans.
The report also notes that the 90-minute special will feature appearances by NHL stars, celebrity animal advocates, and familiar hockey personalities who will provide commentary throughout the competition. U.S. viewers can tune in to the NHL Stanley Pup premiere on truTV or stream it via HBO Max. Meanwhile, Canadian hockey lovers can catch the action over on Sportsnet.
The teaser video has already earned more than 24,000 likes, and the comments section is exactly what you’d expect. One viewer called it “heated woofery.” Another declared their support for Seth Arfis. Plenty of others simply couldn’t get over how cute the dogs were.
And truly, that’s the beauty of Stanley Pup. For one evening, rival fan bases can put aside their differences and agree on something important: every single participant deserves a standing ovation — and hopefully a forever home.
