In the clip, the owner places a burger directly in front of the puppy and asks him to keep an eye on it while he briefly steps away. The setup seems simple enough. However, for a curious young dog with a tempting snack inches from his nose, it’s anything but easy.
At first, Cactus does his best to ignore the burger. He sits still and looks away as if it isn’t even there. The dog owner then adds an extra layer of motivation by telling viewers that if Cactus manages not to eat the burger, he will earn a bone as a reward.
As the seconds pass, Cactus leans in and gives the burger a few cautious licks, clearly torn between temptation and training. Just when it looks like he might give in completely, the owner returns. In the caption, he later explained that watching the video back made him realize how close the moment really was. A few more seconds, he said, and the burger would have been gone. Still, since Cactus never actually took a bite, the pet parent decided he technically passed the test.
True to his word, he rewards Cactus with a bone, praising him enthusiastically for his near win. The puppy’s excitement made it clear that the reward was worth the effort, even if his self-control was tested to the absolute limit.
