Video: Golden Retriever Puppy Learning to Use Her Tongue Is Too Cute

Puppies truly never stop being entertaining, mainly because their entire world is a brand new territory, and that includes their own bodies. Take, for example, this Golden Retriever puppy, Lana. The video from @lanathegoldenretriever_ introduces us to this Bali-born, 4-month-old fluffball who’s still getting acquainted with her own features, especially the one sitting front and center.

Her owner even captions it perfectly: “still trying to figure out how his [sic] face works.” And Lana really is. There’s this split second where instinct kicks in, and she tries to go in for a grateful lick… only her tongue doesn’t quite get the memo.

Golden Retriever puppy has yet to figure out how to use her tongue

The charm of this clip is how casually it escalates from sleepy bliss to “wait… what is happening to my mouth?” The clip opens with Lana in her living room, receiving some of the best possible comfort: deep, soothing under-chin scritches from her human. She leans into them like she’s been waiting all morning for them, eyes half-closed, head tilted in total surrender.

It’s the same instinct you often see in dogs built for closeness — affection shows up in tiny reflexes, like the urge to lick the hand giving them attention. So she does what any pup would: she sticks her tongue out. Except it sort of… stops mid-lick. It just stays there, pressed against her mom’s hand, completely paused, like her brain forgot to hit “return tongue to sender.”

You can actually see the confusion flicker across her face — this adorable blend of, Is this right? Is this how this works? Then, mid-lick, she suddenly starts panting, and that jolts the mechanism back to life. Tongue restored. Crisis averted.

Lana’s hilariously stuck-tongue moment clearly charmed viewers, who saw the adorable confusion of a pup still figuring out the world. No wonder the reel has racked up 6.4K likes already. Viewers are losing it in the comments, dropping comments like “PAWdorable. Would like a million kisses,” “sweetie,” and “cutest pup ever.” Her sweet, expressive face proves that even when they’re clumsy, young dogs are the very best.
