Doug the Pug can now proudly call himself an honorary graduate of the University of New Haven. A few days before his 13th birthday, the influencer dog received an honorary degree in “Furensic Science.” He was joined by his mom and owner Leslie Mosier. In an Instagram video uploaded by the pet parent, the Pug donned a small-sized cap and gown to mark the occasion.

In the video, Mosier documented Doug making history by graduating from university. The viral clip captured the Pug standing beside his fellow graduate students before accepting his honorary science degree, which was accompanied by loud cheers from the audience. The university president even honored the dog with a speech for graduating with the Class of 2025.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Mosier explained that Doug received the “Furensic Science” degree as a nod to Forensic Science, one of the university’s well-renowned programs. The Pug’s association with the institution began when his owner, who works in the university’s social media strategy department, brought the influencer dog to the campus with her.

Eventually, Doug bonded closely with the students and Spot the robot. Speaking about how the special initiative materialized, Mosier recalled that the students began asking to see more of the dog, leading the university to see this as a “perfect chance to create a fun and memorable moment.”

Mosier reflected on Doug’s experience as an honorary graduate. The owner told PEOPLE, “He was excited to see all of his friends and get the attention. He absolutely adores getting recognized and a ton of butt scratches.”

Doug the Pug boasts over 15 million followers across social media. He voiced the character of Monchi in the animated film “The Mitchells vs. the Machines.” The dog has also made an appearance in Katy Perry’s music video for “Swish Swish.”
