A new post by @marincountyfire shows how a scary neighborhood search for a dog ended up turning into an unbelievable rescue mission. This story is about a tiny black Pug named Shadow who wandered away from home and somehow fell right into a deep and narrow hole in the ground. He was stuck at a construction site, while his owners had no clue where he had gone. Thankfully, local emergency crews finally tracked the poor dog down after someone reported it.
Dog trapped in 20-foot deep hole rescued by firefighters
Crews rushed over to the scene in Lagunitas around 7:00 PM. They looked into a narrow hole inside a big excavation area where Shadow was sitting all the way at the bottom of the shaft. It was about 20 feet straight down, and the opening was only a few feet wide. Pugs have short legs and flat faces. So there was absolutely no way for him to climb out alone.
Firefighters had to carefully work through the situation using training normally associated with more technical rescue operations. This wasn’t simply a matter of reaching down and pulling him up. The crew had to rely on specialized confined-space and Urban Search and Rescue skills to safely get to him.
The video shows a firefighter carefully lowering themselves down into the dark gap to scoop Shadow up. Then he brings him right back to the surface, where he hands the pup to another firefighter.
The post quickly got a lot of views and comments from relieved neighbors on Facebook and Instagram. The department even shared a photo of the happy pup after the rescue, and viewers quickly filled the comments with gratitude.
One person commented that they love firefighters because they always jump into action when needed. Another user wished the family deep peace after such a frightening ordeal. Shadow’s owner even popped into the comments on the Facebook post to say how much they appreciate the department’s hard work.
