One of her legs had to be amputated, and despite efforts to save the other, it eventually became unusable.
But Ireland’s story didn’t end in tragedy. After being rescued and taken to Frosted Faces Foundation, a California-based animal shelter, her luck changed. Nick, a volunteer at the shelter, decided to foster her, but that temporary arrangement quickly turned permanent. Moved by her indomitable spirit, he officially adopted her.
Now, with the help of her custom wheelchair, Ireland has fully reclaimed her adventurous spirit. She can be found hiking mountains, paddleboarding, and tubing. However, according to her owner, running along the beach remains her absolute favorite activity. A video of one such beach visit recently went viral on TikTok, amassing over 278K likes and 1,864 comments. In the heartwarming footage, Ireland eagerly waits as Nick helps her down a sandbank. The moment her paws touch the sand, she takes off at full speed, racing joyfully alongside another dog—who appears to be her little brother—straight toward the water.
Nick credits Ireland’s wheelchair for enabling her to live a life as full as any other dog’s. He explained to Newsweek that, while caring for a dog with disabilities requires adjustments — such as assisting her with bathroom routines — it’s well worth it for the happiness and adventures they share.
