Shelter Dog Impresses as Drug-Sniffing K-9 in Texas

A German Shepherd Dog mix adopted from a shelter has gotten a second chance at life as a drug-sniffing K-9 in Fort Worth, Texas. The Fort Worth Police Department adopted their pup from the Fort Worth Animal Control’s Chuck & Brenda Silcox Animal Care & Adoption Center, per Fox News.

Shelter dog takes on fentanyl crisis in his drug-sniffing K-9 role

A Texas shelter dog named Rock has started his role as a K-9 narcotics officer. The rescued pup passed the test in no time, impressing everyone. The canine is a part of the narcotics detection team, helping Fort Worth police take on the fentanyl crisis especially. Sgt. Charles Hubbard, his handler, exclaimed that he could guarantee the pup would have an impressive resume in no time.

Rock’s handler noted, “If you talk to me in five years, I guarantee you we’re going to have kilos of records to reflect his service to the city.” The pup has assisted with keeping thousands of fentanyl pills off the street.

The German Shepherd Dog mix has been trained to detect methamphetamine, heroin, cocaine, and marijuana. Rock has already assisted with numerous arrests. He was rescued last summer at the age of only six months old. Rock was accompanied by his sister Jade, who the Fort Worth Police Department also took in. However, she will be working in a local school district.

The Texas shelter superintendent regarded the two dogs highly, even when they were first brought in. After some quick tennis ball exercises, Anastasia Ramsey noticed that the pups had it in them to become excellent K-9 officers. After a two-week trial, the police were impressed with Rock’s energy and drive. They were confident the canines would excel at their tasks after some training.

Compared to Rock’s high energy, Jade had a softer personality. So, the department decided to designate the German Shepherd mix as a school resource role instead.
