Retired Wisconsin Police Dog ‘Addy’ Dies at the Age of 16

The Wauwatosa Police Department in Wisconsin is mourning the loss of Addy, their retired senior police dog. Addy passed away at the age of 16. The department took to Facebook Wednesday, April 3, to share news of Addy’s demise.

Retired police dog ‘Addy’ was Wauwatosa Police Department’s first K-9

According to Fox6 Milwaukee, Addy joined the Wauwatosa Police Department in May 2010. He served alongside his handler, Detective Tim Kastner. The department described Addy as a “dual-purpose K9” highly trained in patrol work and narcotic detection.

Interestingly, Addy was so skilled in his role that he and his handler received a Meritorious Apprehension award and a K9 Handler of the Year award back in 2014. Over the years, the two made “countless” arrests together, including high-risk apprehensions.

After nearly 10 years of dedicated service, Addy officially retired in 2019. After retiring, Addy lived with his handler, Kastner, and his family. According to the news outlet, the senior pup died with Kastner right by his side. At this point in time, Addy’s cause of death remains unclear.

In a lengthy Facebook post, the Wauwatosa Police Department memorialized Addy, acknowledging his significant contributions toward their K-9 unit’s success. Part of the post read: “K9 Addy and Detective Kastner built our K9 program from the ground up, setting the foundation for the successful program we have today.”

Moreover, the department shared: “As much as K9 Addy was driven to work, one of his favorite parts of the job was attending community events, including visiting schools and Tosa Night Out. K9 Addy also loved playing with his co-workers and never missed the chance to be pet or play ball.”

Furthermore, the department extended its deepest condolences to their colleague Kastner and his family, who shared an indescribable bond with Addy.
