Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen crowned winner of Westminster Dog Show

Buddy Holly, a PBGV, won Best in Show at the 147th Annual Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show this week. The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Queens, New York, hosted the renowned competition for the first time. More than 2,500 canines representing 200 dog breeds competed for the prestigious title.

Before announcing the winner, Beth Sweigart, who judged the Best in Show round, showed her appreciation for the pups.

“I want to thank the dogs themselves, who give so much to our lives,” Sweigart said.

Buddy Holly’s win made his owner and handler, Janice Hayes, beam with pride.

“I never thought a PBGV would do this; I’ve been dreaming about this since I was 9 years old,” Hayes gushed to FS1.

As is tradition, Buddy Holly will visit the Empire State Building and attend a “champion’s lunch” at Tavern on the Green in Central Park, according to People.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen facts and traits

The Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen is a small scent hound who has won the hearts of millions. Although the dog breed appears to be designed for winsome cuteness, in actuality, PBGVs are tough hunters who were developed for a specific purpose: to hunt small game in the rough terrain of the Vendeen region of France. The breed is known for a merry and outgoing personality.
