10 Best Dog Breeds According to ChatGPT

Best dog breeds? That answer is unquestionably a matter of subjectivity. There is no overall consensus, but for better or worse, artificial intelligence (AI) has firmly entered our everyday online experience. The shiny new AI toy of the day appears to be the AI chatbot, ChatGPT. And since it hasn’t reached Terminator 2: Judgment Day levels yet, we thought it would be a fun exercise to ask its opinion on dog breeds, nonetheless. Here was our process:

How We Used ChatGPT To Ask About Dog Breeds

The process was fairly simple, we logged into ChatGPT and typed “what are the 10 best dog breeds?” Chat GPT then offered a disclaimer and an existential thought about the word “best.”

Before listing the dog breeds, the chatbot explicitly stated,  “Determining the “best” dog breeds can be subjective and dependent on various factors like personality, lifestyle, and preferences. However, here’s a list of ten popular breeds known for their diverse characteristics and suitability for various lifestyles:”

1. Labrador Retriever

Chat GPT’s response: “Labrador Retriever: Friendly, outgoing, and gentle; great family dogs and excellent companions.”

While we certainly wouldn’t recommend having a Labrador Retriever if you live in a small apartment, this breed obviously checks all the boxes when searching for a canine companion. Overwhelmingly affectionate with family and strangers alike, easy to groom, and hardworking in whatever task you want them to do, Labrador Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in America for a reason.

2. German Shepherd

ChatGPT’s response: “German Shepherd: Intelligent, loyal, and versatile; often used in police and military work, and as service dogs.”

Fun fact: the German Shepherd is the single most filmed dog breed in Hollywood with over 630 IMDb credits at the time of the writing, starring in numerous blockbusters such as I Am Legend and Signs as well as basically every police procedural on network television. This is due to their high intelligence and trainability.

3. Golden Retriever

ChatGPT’s response: “Golden Retriever: Affectionate, intelligent, and trainable; known for their friendly nature and suitability as therapy dogs.”

Much like the #1 spot on this list, Golden Retrievers are one of the most popular dog breeds in America. Once in a while, you come across a person with big Golden Retriever energy – jovial, eager to please, smart, and fills every room they walk into with good vibes. They’re just happy to be here. If you can’t be friends with them, you might be more of a cat person.

4. Bulldog

ChatGPT’s response: “Bulldog: Calm, courageous, and friendly; characterized by their distinct appearance and gentle disposition.”

If you’re looking for a napping buddy, the Bulldog is for you. Although the perfect dog for the chill lifestyle, Bulldogs can suffer a myriad of health problems Brachycephalic Syndrome and Hip Dysplasia, so be sure to monitor your Bulldog’s health closely.

5. Beagle

ChatGPT’s response: “Beagle: Curious, merry, and friendly; energetic dogs with a great sense of smell often used in detection work.”

The inspiration for the beloved and iconic comic strip character, Snoopy, Beagles like to have fun but have stubborn streaks. As long as you’re creative with their training techniques and don’t mind them following any scent that strikes their fancy, you’ll have a friend for life. On a personal note, I have unresolved beef with Beagles as they always laughed at me when I missed a shot in Duck Hunt. It was the controller, I swear!

6. French Bulldog

ChatGPT’s response: “French Bulldog: Adaptable, playful, and affectionate; small-sized companions known for their distinctive bat-like ears.”

7. Poodle

ChatGPT’s response: “Poodle: Intelligent, active, and hypoallergenic; available in different sizes and popular for their low-shedding coat.”

Since the inception of the Westminster Dog Show in 1907, a poodle has won Best in Show ten times. Elegant and extremely intelligent, poodles are undeniably one of the most sought-after dog breeds in the world. However, the poodle has so many amazing traits (and three different sizes) that they are overwhelmingly used in the controversial practice of crossbreeding. At this time, there are over 60 poodle mixes alive today including LabradoodleGoldendoodle, and Cockapoo.

8. Yorkshire Terrier

ChatGPT’s response: “Yorkshire Terrier: Spirited, affectionate, and small-sized; known for their long, silky coat and confident demeanor.”

The good ol’ Yorkie. “Spirited” is definitely one way to say it. The ultimate companion dog, they’re happy to be in your lap at all times.

9. Dachshund

ChatGPT’s response: “Dachshund: Loyal, curious, and playful; characterized by their elongated body and short legs.”

Also known as the wiener dog, the Dachshund has always been a popular breed.

10. Border Collie

ChatGPT’s response: “Border Collie: Highly intelligent, energetic, and trainable; often considered one of the smartest dog breeds, commonly used in agility and obedience competitions.”

When it comes to physical and mental agility, Border Collies are pound-for-pound one of the best dog breeds. Whether it be Chaser, the Border Collie who knew over 1,000 words, or Ralph, the Border Collie who has climbed over 219 mountains in Scotland, this breed is eager for any challenge.

What did we learn from ChatGPT?

Well, not much. Just like any list, it was very subjective. However, we here at DogTime agree this is a pretty solid list as any dog can be the “best” if it is given the love and care they need.
