Can Dogs Eat Pizza? Is Pizza Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat pizza? You may be asking this because you don’t want your pup to feel left out on pizza night. Humans can eat pizza, so is it also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is no, pizza is not good for dogs to eat. Pizza isn’t toxic for dogs, but it isn’t healthy for your pup and can cause gastrointestinal upset. No matter how much they beg, you should keep pizza out of your dog’s reach.

If your dog has eaten pizza, you may consider contacting your veterinarian for guidance. Here’s why pizza isn’t good for your dog.

Why Is Pizza Bad For Dogs?

Pizza is filled with empty calories. There is almost no nutritional value to pizza, and it can cause weight gain and other health issues if eaten regularly — in both dogs and humans.

With that said, cheese, tomato sauce, and crust are not toxic to dogs. Additionally, most common pizza toppings, like sausage, pepperoni, and even pineapple, aren’t toxic to your pup, either.

Meats used on pizza are typically loaded with salt, which isn’t good for your dog and can cause dehydration. All in all, pizza is not a dog-friendly food.

If your pup snagged a slice of pizza, you should keep an eye on their reaction. Some dogs are lactose intolerant, so all that gooey cheese may cause bloating, vomiting, and diarrhea.

If your dog has an underlying disorder that requires them to keep a strict diet, like diabetes, you should contact your vet. The glucose content in the crust may be dangerous for dogs with glucose processing disorders.

The important thing to note is that your dog is not in imminent danger if they eat a slice of pizza. Even if they have eaten an entire pizza, they will most likely be back to normal after it passes through their digestive system.

Of course, this depends on the size and overall health of your pup. Still, as long as an accidental slice of pizza isn’t a common occurrence in your furry friend’s diet, your doggo will be okay.
