Can Dogs Eat Pineapple? Is Pineapple Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat pineapple? It’s a question many dog parents ask because who doesn’t love pineapple? It’s sweet, it’s tart, and it quite literally gushes with tropical fruit juice. Sharing this amazing treat with our dogs is a priority! But is pineapple safe for dogs?

The short answer is yes, pineapple is safe for dogs, with light preparation. In fact, not only is it safe, but it’s also highly nutritious. Pineapple is loaded with vitamins and minerals that aid your dog significantly.

But, as always, you must consult a trusted veterinarian before introducing any new foods to your dog. Here is what we’ve gathered on why pineapple is an excellent choice for dogs, as an occasional treat.

How Is Pineapple Good For Dogs?

Humans eat pineapple in a plethora of ways, and we love it. But for dogs, simple is healthiest. Raw and ripe are all a good pineapple has to be in order to provide your pup with a highly delicious and nutritional treat.

And boy, pineapples do pack a hearty nutrient punch.

Ripened pineapple contains vitamin C, B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, manganese, copper, potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, zinc, and magnesium. All of those nutrients cover nearly every single one of your dog’s vital systems while providing a decadent snack.

Dogs love how juicy pineapple is, and a good chunk of it is satisfying for them to dig into. Luckily, the preparation of it is so easy that providing good-sized chunks is no issue at all.

If you were bummed that passion fruit wasn’t on the table for your dog, maybe try pineapple instead!

Exotic fruits are super fun to try out with pets; papaya and dragon fruit are other amazing options. Just make sure you do your diligence with the preparation beforehand.

Pineapple preparation for your dog is super easy. It’s exactly how you prepare it for yourself, usually. We’re not terribly fond of consuming the rough, prickly exterior of the fruit, and neither are dogs. Plus, it can cause intestinal obstruction.

Even easier, most grocery stores provide fresh pineapple already cut up into chunks. No work needed there at all! However, be mindful of packaged pineapple. Fresh pineapple, simply cut, is completely okay. But canned pineapple and dried pineapple are much too sweet.

Keep serving amounts to just a few chunks, every so often. It will be a truly rewarding treat in moderation. When introducing this fruit, start out with a few tiny bits, free of the skin, to ensure that your dog is on board with it. Then, just keep an eye out for any allergic reaction.

Also, pineapple is a high-sugar fruit, so moderation is absolutely necessary. Too much sugar causes significant stomach upset and digestion issues in dogs. Really, it does in humans, too. Our dogs don’t need to make our mistakes, though, do they?
