Can Dogs Eat Veggie Burgers? Are Veggie Burgers Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat veggie burgers? Maybe you’ve wondered if you could share a bite with your pooch while reaching for some veggie burgers ahead of a barbecue with family and friends. If humans can eat veggie burgers, can dogs safely eat them too?

There is no short yes or no answer to whether dogs can eat veggie burgers safely. Part of the issue with veggie burgers is the wide range of different types of veggie burgers available.

But whether the veggie burgers in question are made out of grains, beans, soy, or other meat substitutes, there’s a strong chance that they will have ingredients like onions and garlic added to them to improve the taste. These are the sorts of ingredients that could prove harmful to your dog.

Additionally, many commercially produced veggie burgers are high in sodium.

As always, you must consult your veterinarian before you share any human foods for your dog. Here’s what you need to know about veggie burgers and dogs.

When Are Veggie Burgers Okay For Dogs To Eat?

A veggie burger could be suitable to serve to your dog, as long as it’s only made of beneficial ingredients. These include certain beans, grains, and actual vegetables.

These will provide an amount of protein and a decent level of fiber to your dog, along with a range of vitamins.

Additionally, if your dog does not have any issues with soy, then many of the meat-substitute veggie burgers could be considered as an occasional meat alternative.

Unfortunately, almost all veggie burgers that you can buy in the store contain added ingredients that make them potentially problematic for your dog. Onions, garlic, and various spices are usually added to most veggie burgers. These can all prove to be harmful or even toxic to your dog.

Additionally, processed veggie burgers are often high in sodium. Consuming too much salt is not good for your dog. Along with increasing the chance of issues such as heart disease and high blood pressure, too much sodium can lead to salt poisoning.

Also remember that, even if you find a veggie burger based around ingredients that are a good fit for your dog, avoid serving them on a bun and with other toppings and condiments that may aggravate your dog or cause digestive issues.
