Can Dogs Eat Nachos? Are Nachos Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat nachos? You may be asking this because your pup snagged some of your nacho snack, and you’re worried about their health, or maybe you want to share your nachos with your dog. Humans can eat nachos, so are they also safe for dogs to eat?

The short answer is no, nachos are not good for dogs to eat. Nachos contain ingredients that could make your pup sick.

If your dog has eaten nachos, you should contact your vet for guidance. Here’s why nachos are bad for dogs.

Why Are Nachos Bad For Dogs?

Nachos can also be as simple as corn chips with melted cheese, or they can be fully loaded with ingredients that aren’t good for your pup, like spices, onions, and greasy meats.

Though your pup can eat cheese in moderation, corn chips are generally not good for your dog’s digestive system. Because of this, you shouldn’t give your pup even the simplest nachos.

If you want your dog to experience the delicious meats that come on some nachos, you can serve your pup up some plain, unseasoned ground beef or turkey with a sprinkle of cheese.

Though you shouldn’t give your dog this meal all the time, plain beef and turkey are nutritious for your dog when consumed in moderation.

The effects that eating nachos might have on your pup depend on the ingredients in the nachos. If your dog ate nachos with just cheese, they might show signs of slight stomach upset, depending on how sensitive their digestive system is.

Nachos with seasoned meat are more likely to cause diarrhea or vomiting.

If you know the nachos your pup ate contain onions, then you should immediately call your vet. Onions are toxic to dogs and can cause hemolytic anemia, so your vet may recommend that your dog be taken in.

Signs of hemolytic anemia are lethargy, pale gums, vomiting, and diarrhea. If your dog is exhibiting these symptoms, take them to the vet.
