Can Dogs Eat Chorizo? Is Chorizo Safe For Dogs?

Can dogs eat chorizo? Maybe you’ve wondered if you could share some with your pup while chopping up chorizo to use in a classic Spanish or Mexican dish. If humans can eat chorizo, can dogs safely eat it too?

The short answer is no, dogs can’t safely eat chorizo. Due to the high fat and sodium content of chorizo, it’s really not a suitable food for dogs. Additionally, chorizo is usually made with extra spices and chilies that could be harmful to your dog.

Some types of chorizo are also sold uncooked, so your dog could also risk eating contaminated meat.

If your dog manages to eat some chorizo, you should call your veterinarian for advice. Here’s what you need to know about chorizo and dogs.

Why Is Chorizo Bad For Dogs?

The fact that chorizo is a food that is considered to be high in fat and high in sodium makes it unsuitable for dogs. Chorizo is also usually made with extra spices like garlic and paprika or chili peppers, all of which could also prove to be harmful to your dog.

If a dog eats a high fat diet, they put themselves at risk of becoming overweight. Dogs who are medically obese are more likely to experience further health issues. Additionally, consuming too many fatty foods can expose a dog to the risk of developing pancreatitis.

The high sodium content of chorizo also makes it a red flag for dogs. High sodium intake can result in heart disease and blood pressure, along with the risk of actual salt poisoning.

Some types of chorizo that you can purchase at the store are made with uncooked meat — so if your dog consumes this sort of chorizo they risk contracting a parasitic infection called Trichinosis.

Finally, chorizo is usually made with extra spices and often incorporates chili peppers, all of which could also prove to be harmful to your dog’s health.

If you notice your dog scoop up a small piece of chorizo that’s fallen to the floor while you’re cooking, there’s a good chance everything will be fine. Just keep an eye out for any of the symptoms of salt poisoning. These include diarrhea, vomiting, and drinking a lot more water than usual.

If you see any of these symptoms or witness your dog consuming a large amount of chorizo, it’s best to give your vet a call. They will be able to advise you on whether your dog will require medical help.
